Many would agree that the world of craft is rarely seen as unpredictable and intriguing, by taking advantage of this preconception I am able to combine craft with horror and create an unsuspecting humor. My work balances the femininity of the materials with the imagery of pop culture such as zombies and other horror scenes. The familiarity that the material invokes is important when presented with grotesque imagery, because it provides a sense of comfort and also visual stability. I structure my images through simple panels of color and a low level of tonal ranges. Bright colors allow the humorous subject matter to shine through as well as camouflage the dark undertones that the gruesome images bring about. By using soft materials, the work becomes more approachable and accessible to the viewer through it's inviting tangibility. The unconventional methods of my work surprise the viewer and play a role in altering our perspectives of not only horror, but domestic craft as well.
