Civilian Art Projects announces Jason Falchook's "Laying Tracks," a solo exhibition of new photographic work.

Jason Falchook's photography has always examined our perception of the built world. He is particularly interested in exploring the human drive to organize space and create the illusion of control. His new work taps into these curiosities while suggesting a greater order outside of human dominance. The new work focuses on moments changed by light and the passage of time. These moments, like a song, emote energy and movement and exist beyond the certainties of the formal organization of space. The title of the exhibition, "Laying tracks," references the process of recording music or building a system of transport. The title suggests an evolution of understanding one's trajectory in the world as well as growth in the artists' practice.

Debuting at Civilian Art Projects, this new body of sixteen photographs of varying scale (from 8x10" to 20x24") is a rich collection of images that render subtle subjects equal to their textured environment. The work connects moments of time over the past several years, refining them into a "back to basics" approach creating a network of simple gestures. Light, and its ability to transform the way we see, feel and think about our environment, is a narrative running through the work.

According to the artist, "I wanted to simplify; to distill the work to the very elements inherent to photography: light, space and time....At first I was simply photographing disparate moments that felt special and right to me. I was not setting out to do anything in particular. Sometimes you just have to trust what you are doing. After a while I began to see a pattern in what I was shooting. I had probably been shooting for a year or more before I realized that certain images belonged together. Once you are aware of the pattern you can consider things more carefully and examine them from different perspectives."

Jason Falchook is a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art and Design (1998). He lives and works in New York where his work was recently on exhibit at the Bronx Museum and Nurture Art. He has had solo exhibitions at Fusebox Gallery in Washington, DC (2002 and 2004) as well as group exhibitions at the Katonah Museum of Art (Katonah, NY); Shade Projects and Monorchid Gallery (Phoenix, AZ); The National Academy of Science (Washington, DC); Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC); Art Positions, Art Basel Miami Beach (Miami, FL); U.S. Embassy Brasilia (Brasilia, Brazil); Instituto De Arte Fotographico (Lima, Peru); and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art (FL). His photography is in the permanent collections of the U.S. State Department, the National Academy of Sciences, and several private collections.

Please note, Civilian will be closed March 2-5 to participate in the SCOPE NY ART SHOW.
